DVRA Welcomes You!

Dear DVRA Members and Prospective Members:

Welcome to DVRA’s 57th year. I offer special thanks to our members for continuing to support our organization with your annual dues and meeting participation. You keep DVRA strong and active in the literacy community. And I extend an earnest invitation to prospective members to join DVRA this year. It’s easy to do at www.dvra.org. Click on the membership link to download an application.

I am Theresa Deckebach and I am privileged (and ready!) to serve as your president this year. As I traveled the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains this summer with my family, my wise husband helped me reunite with a universal, but easily forgotten, truth. It’s agreed that careful planning is essential – whether it is for a trip, a critical thinking lesson, or a home renovation. Without a plan, one could lose time, student engagement or money. But strict adherence to that plan, following it without seizing the inevitable digressions, could also result in loss. Consider how many unseen waterfalls, unrecognized student inquiries, and untested architectural ideas that would pile up on life’s roadside.

So make a plan to join DVRA this year at one of our excellent events and embrace the unexpected – a networking opportunity, a new direction in your teaching, or a resource that helps you bridge the distance between you and the unreachable student. See the enclosed bookmark for all of the dates and locations. Join us!

And please read the enclosed brochure to find information about how you can become even more active in DVRA. Note our various committees, and opportunities for community outreach, greater involvement in legislation affecting literacy, international literacy projects, and more. Again, join us!

Sincerely,

Theresa Deckebach
President, DVRA
